When he acquired the property and set about planting it he was 76 and reluctantly bowed to family pressure to sell Leconﬁeld to nephew Richard in ’81. Leconfield Coonawarra embraces the essence of the famous South Australian wine region by creating rich, elegant and sensual wines. Leconfield is famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon which is the flagship of the brand. Over the last two decades and further reinforced through recent show success, the Riesling vines selected and planted by Sydney Hamilton in 1974 have yielded wines that have become benchmarks of the variety within the Coonawarra region. Leconfield’s Senior Winemaker, Paul Gordon, continually produces high quality wines. He has a particular passion for the French grape variety Merlot, having crafted it over his many years, the Leconfield Coonawarra Merlot is second to none.
A true Reserve wine, the key to ‘The Sydney’ is the vineyard selection made at harvest. We were meticulous in choosing the most consistently ripe grapes from our 30 year old vineyard and fermenting in our favourite small fermenter. This wine has a long, stylish palate with silky tannins that provides persistence.

Our philosophy is to produce a Cabernet Sauvignon displaying both depth and elegance where oak complexes and enhances the fruit but is not allowed to dominate. The Leconfield Coonawarra Merlot is recognised as a benchmark for both the variety and the region.
When Sydney first established his Coonawarra vineyards his first planting were that of Riesling from cuttings that he took from his Happy Valley vineyards near Adelaide. Sydney was a pioneer of the Australian Winemaking Industry by introducing the process of cold fermentation. This process allowed for more stylish elegant white table wines to be produced. The Leconfield Estate Whites portfolio consists of Old Vines Riesling and chardonnay – two varietals perfectly suited to Coonawarra’s cool climate.
