LECONFIELD COONAWARRA
A Winemaking Legend’s dream of crafting the ‘classic Australian Cabernet’ made real.
In 1974, at 76 years of age, with a winemaking career spanning nearly 60 years, Sydney Hamilton (1898-1987) selected a fine piece of ‘Terra Rossa’ country at Coonawarra to fulfil a life’s ambition.
That ambition was to grow and produce a classic Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. Sydney named the estate Leconfield, after his English ancestor, Lord Leconfield, and set about establishing a remarkable reputation for Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.
Leconfield Coonawarra embraces the essence of the famous South Australian wine region by creating rich, elegant and sensual wines. Leconfield is famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon which is the flagship of the brand. Over the last two decades, and further reinforced through recent show success, the Riesling vines selected and planted by Sydney Hamilton in 1974 have yielded wines that have become benchmarks of the variety within the Coonawarra region. With a passion for Merlot, Paul Gordon’s expert winemaking has seen the Leconfield Coonawarra Merlot become one of the best wines of the variety produced in Australia.
Great Wines Crafted From Great Vineyards
THE LEGEND OF SYDNEY HAMILTON
Leconfield Coonawarra was established in 1974 by noted oenologist, Sydney Hamilton, at the age of 76. Sydney was especially known for pioneering
temperature-controlled fermentation of white wines. This technique allowed for the preservation of delicate aromas and flavours and has become the benchmark for production of white wine around the world.
THE COONAWARRA VINEYARDS
Renowned for its rich, terra rossa soil, the Coonawarra is one of Australia’s great wine regions. The first vines were planted in 1891 as part of the ‘Penola Fruit Colony’ and the area quickly achieved recognition for its fine red wines. Undoubtedly, Coonawarra produces Australia’s greatest Cabernet Sauvignon.
